EMRS - the appetiser

Tassie pollsters EMRS had front page of the Examiner today reporting that David Bartlett scored an impressive 46% as preferred premier, compared to his predecessor, Paul Lennon's 17% just a month ago.

There are a few things to note:

First is that this is just a taster, an appetiser. EMRS would not have just asked this one question - it is a certainty that voting intentions were asked as well. What we are seeing here is the Examiner stretching out the headlines. Expect voting intentions either tomorrow or later in the week. (I don't blame the newspaper for this. Polls are expensive things - that's why we see precious few in Tasmania - so the Examiner will want to maximise its investment.)

Second is that this poll is statistically significant. Readers will be aware of my caution in reading too much into one poll, but in this case the change from 17% to 46% is so great that it has to be taken notice of.

I'll hang on saying much more until we see voting intentions, as it is these that really count. I'm expecting to see a rise in the Labor primary support, the Liberals to stay about the same, and for the Greens to drop. Once I have the figures I will graph the change in primary support since the 2006 election, which will give some idea how the parties are travelling.

UPDATE 24 June: Dr Kevin Bonham is on the money here (comment #7) regarding the problem journalists have distinguishing "approval" from "preferred" ratings. The Examiner gets it wrong above.
